Arthur Eddington Quotes on the Energy Source of Stars – Fascinating Insights from 1926

„The problem of the source of a star’s energy will be considered, by a process of exhaustion we are driven to conclude that the only possible source of a star’s energy is subatomic yet it must be confessed that the only hypothesis shows little disposition to accommodate itself to the detailed requirements of observation, and a critic might count up a large number of fatal objections.“

Arthur EddingtonArthur Eddington's quote on stars’ subatomic energy source highlights the challenges of science explaining fundamental processes.

Quote about the source of a star's energy by Arthur Eddington

Arthur Stanley Eddington (1882–1944) was a British astrophysicist, astronomer, and physicist known for his work on stellar structure and relativity. He played a key role in elucidating the processes powering stars and the role of nuclear fusion as their energy source.

But if you ask an astronomer why is the Sun of gas just ask them why is the Sun of gas it's a very simple question and they actually will not be able to answer the question except to say it's too hot to be anything but a gas if you get the Sun wrong you'll get all of astronomy wrong so it's extremely important that we set the phase of the Sun correctly accepting a new phase for the Sun will lead to the collapse of modern astronomy.” Now the attempt apparent temperature the Sun is obviously nothing but the temperature of the solar rays now he's talking about the the continuous spectrum depending entirely on the nature of the Rays and hence a property of the Rays and not of the property of the Sun itself so he's telling you this is not a property of the Sun here therefore it would not it would be not only more convenient but also more correct to apply this notation directly instead of speaking of a fictitious temperature of the son which can be made to have meaning only by the introduction of an assumption that does not hold in reality. "Such a condition would imply that we occupy a unique position in the universe, analogous, in a sense, to the ancient conception of a central earth. The hypothesis cannot be disproved but it is unwelcome and would be accepted only as a last resort in order to save the phenomena. [...] But the unwelcome supposition of a favoured location must be avoided at all costs." Edwin Powell Hubble

Quote about the mystery and unexplained nature of gravity by Otto JungCopyright © yoice.net – Quote Artwork

"For what I want to say here, knowledge of the book's content is not necessarily required, because it concerns easily understandable facts about the cause and nature of gravitation—the force that presses everything to the ground and is not easily harnessed permanently for propulsion purposes, the force that keeps all celestial bodies in their orbits and holds our entire universe together. How gravitation achieves the feat of creating the conditions for our earthly life remains unexplained by science to this day. Science only offers a series of competing model concepts here. Even the nature of gravitation is largely unknown to it. As Sir Isaac Newton (1643–1727) said at the time: "I have explained the celestial phenomena and the tides based on gravity, but I have not been able to derive the cause of the properties of gravity from the phenomena so far." Nothing has changed since then. One who must know because he struggled daily with the problem of overcoming it, the former deputy chief engineer of the Rolls-Royce aircraft engine works, A. V. Cleaver, summed it up as follows, I quote literally: "Gravity is truly a highly mysterious and elusive phenomenon. It seems questionable whether many people, even technically trained ones, realize how justified this claim is or whether they notice the conspiracy of silence with which gravity is treated in most physics textbooks. It is almost reminiscent of a Polynesian taboo or the Victorian attitude towards certain topics such as sex or particular organs and functions, which were deemed somewhat improper. The student learns that all bodies attract each other, that the stability of the universe is determined thereby, and the equations of Newton's laws describe their effects. Yet—unless he is a specialized graduate student of pure physics—he is still expected to accept the old idea of “action at a distance,” and it is quite unlikely that any of his teachers will draw his attention to our complete ignorance of the physical relationships between gravity and other phenomena, simply because we know nothing about it and because the academic world apparently prefers not to broadcast this fact!""
