„Political revolutions aim to change political institutions in ways that those institutions themselves prohibit. Their success therefore necessitates the partial relinquishment of one set of institutions in favor of another, and in the interim, society is not fully governed by institutions at all“

Thomas KuhnThomas Kuhn analyzes political revolutions as transitional phases between institutional orders and new political structures.

Thomas Kuhn quote about political revolutions and the temporary loss of institutional governance

Thomas Samuel Kuhn (1922–1996) was one of the influential philosophers of science of the 20th century. In his major work, “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions,” he described the development of science as a sequence of periods of normal science interrupted by scientific revolutions. He is particularly associated with the concept of the paradigm shift and with the idea that different paradigms may be incommensurable.

"The Anarchists are right in everything; in the negation of the existing order and in the assertion that, without Authority there could not be worse violence than that of Authority under existing conditions. They are mistaken only in thinking that anarchy can be instituted by a violent revolution. But it will be instituted only by there being more and more people who do not require the protection of governmental power and by there being more and more people who will be ashamed of applying this power." Lew Nikolajewitsch Graf Tolstoi

"The power structures that have emerged are not democratically legitimized, and they can no longer be voted out of office through any electoral process. The most important power structures in our society are no longer accessible to the voter at all… and one does not want the ordinary citizen to even know that they exist. They are meant to remain invisible within the framework of public debate." Prof. Rainer Mausfeld

"Neither revolution nor reformation can ultimately change a society, rather you must tell a new powerful tale, one so persuasive that it sweeps away the old myths and becomes the preferred story, one so inclusive that it gathers all the bits of our past and our present into a coherent whole, one that even shines some light into the future so that we can take the next step… If you want to change a society, then you have to tell an alternative story." Ivan Illich
