Thomas Kuhn on Paradigm Shifts and Scientific Change

„The transition between competing paradigms cannot be made a step at a time, forced by logic and neutral experience. Like the gestalt switch, it must occur all at once (though not necessarily in an instant) or not at all.“

Thomas KuhnThomas Kuhn explains why scientific paradigm shifts do not always occur gradually through logic and experience.

Thomas Kuhn quote about paradigm shifts and scientific change

Thomas Samuel Kuhn (1922–1996) was one of the influential philosophers of science of the 20th century. In his major work, “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions,” he described the development of science as a sequence of periods of normal science interrupted by scientific revolutions. He is particularly associated with the concept of the paradigm shift and with the idea that different paradigms may be incommensurable.

"Activating collective consciousness is probably one of the most difficult tasks to attempt because people are largely unaware of the extent to which their thinking is governed by tacit rules and predetermined as given, assumed notions that, because they appear as self-evident truth, render ideology invisible. Truly unrestricted intellectual debate feels threatening because it strives to break out of this cognitive cage. Worse, this cage is so insidious that it influences even those who are already outside the mainstream. People are rarely, if ever, persuaded by argument. Those who adopt dissenting opinions do so ,because they were already naturally predisposed to do so and events have brought about a process by which they have become more true to themselves." "Individuals who break through by inventing a new paradigm are almost always either very young men or very new to the field whose paradigm they change. These are the men who, being little committed by prior practice to the traditional rules of normal science, are particularly likely to see that those rules no longer define a playable game and conceive another set that can replace them." "Basically, we must now say, there is only spirit. Matter is, so to speak, the slag of the spiritual. In our limited human perception, we regard this slag—as we can grasp it with our hands—as far more important than the spiritually alive. But in fact, it must be recognized: Ultimately, there is nothing that exists, nothing that exists by itself. There is only change, transformation, processes. Against this background, we can say: At every moment, the world is newly created. Paradigm of the living!" Hans-Peter Dürr

"We can only live the changes we wish to see: we cannot think our way to humanity. Every one of us, every group, must become the model of that which we desire to create. We must break the obsolete social and economic systems that divide the world between the over-privileged and the under-privileged. Each of us, whether government leader or protester, business executive or worker, professor or student, share a common guilt." Ivan Illich
