Clive Staples Lewis was an Irish writer and literary scholar. He taught at Magdalen College, University of Oxford, and held the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English Literature at the University of Cambridge.

Lewis argues that humanity's ability to recognize meaninglessness is itself evidence of underlying meaning in the universe. The argument uses an analogy between cognition and perception to demonstrate that consciousness and understanding necessarily presuppose that the universe cannot be entirely devoid of meaning.
