Quote by Fred Hoyle on the Probability of Complex Order

„A junkyard contains all the bits and pieces of a Boeing 747, dismembered and in disarray. A whirlwind happens to blow through the yard. What is the chance that after its passage a fully assembled 747, ready to fly, will be found standing there? So small as to be negligible, even if a tornado were to blow through enough junkyards to fill the whole Universe.“

Fred HoyleFred Hoyle explains the negligible chance that a fully assembled Boeing 747 could spontaneously arise from chaos.

Fred Hoyle vividly illustrates the near impossibility of spontaneous complex order emerging from chaos.

Fred Hoyle quote about the probability of complex order and the formation of a Boeing 747

Fred Hoyle (1915–2001) was a British astronomer known for his work in theoretical astrophysics, notably for his contributions to the theory of nucleosynthesis in stars. He was also a prolific science fiction writer and science communicator.

"The chance that higher life forms might have emerged through evolutionary processes is comparable with the chance that a tornado sweeping through a junk yard might assemble a Boeing 747 from the material therein." Fred Hoyle

"Imagine 1050 blind persons each with a scrambled Rubik's cube, and try to conceive of the chance of them all simultaneously arriving at the solved form. You then have a chance of arriving by random shuffling, of just one of the many biopolymers on which life depends. The notion that not only the biopolymers but the operating program of a living cell could be arrived at by chance in a primordial organic soup here on the Earth is evidently nonsense of a high order." "The likelihood of the formation of life from inanimate matter is 1 to a number with 40,000 noughts after it (1040,000).... It is big enough to bury Darwin and the whole theory of evolution. There was no primeval soup, neither on this planet nor any other, and if the beginnings of life were not random, they must therefore have been the product of purposeful intelligence." Fred Hoyle

"Life cannot have had a random beginning. ... The trouble is that there are about two thousand enzymes, and the chance of obtaining them all in a random trial is only one part in 10 to the 40,000 power, an outrageously small probability that could not be faced even if the whole universe consisted of organic soup."
