Alexander Unzicker | Particle physics is money thrown away

„It happened quickly: last year we heard about the ‘God particle’ Higgs boson, this year it was promptly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. And yet few people in Stockholm knew exactly what they were voting for. The Academy was faced with overwhelming expectations, which CERN's propaganda had built up with intensive lobbying to justify the most expensive experiment of all time.

The sensational news that a fundamental particle had been discovered lies somewhere between a misuse of language and a lie. What was found did not solve a single problem in physics, and yet was immediately hailed as the discovery of the century. Whether this was deliberate misdirection, shameless puffery or foolish parroting remains to be seen.

The only thing that is certain is that great physicists such as Albert Einstein would have found the Higgs story completely ridiculous. They would not have believed for a second that this highly complicated model of elementary particle physics with its dozens of uncertain numbers could be a meaningful description of nature.

The claim that the “Higgs mechanism” contributes to the understanding of mass is particularly brazen. Paul Dirac, who spent years pondering the still puzzling mass ratio of protons and electrons, would turn in his grave if he heard about it.

High-energy physics has long since mutated from a science into a high-performance technical sport, driven by the same idea of higher collision energies. In terms of fundamental knowledge of nature, its results are completely worthless. The way they are sold as progress is dishonest and dangerous.

Particle physics is money thrown away
Anyone who has followed accelerator physics over the last few decades must have noticed that the strategy of filtering rare but ultimately banal signals out of the flood of data and explaining them as new particles apparently never ends. Just because the ring-shaped machines keep entire generations of researchers busy, it is no longer noticeable that the game is repeated every 10 to 15 years and that particle physics has literally been going round in circles for half a century.

The idea that tens of thousands of physicists are conducting an unmanageable experiment on a nonsensical theoretical model seems to forbid itself. It is too painful to even consider. But this is soberly true. Particle physics is money thrown away.“

Quote on particle physics by Alexander Unzicker about the misuse of language and money in fundamental physics research

Alexander Unzicker is a German physicist, founder of the initiative "Thinking Physics Differently," and author of several books criticizing contemporary research culture and the handling of theoretical models. He advocates for a scientific methodology that serves deeper understanding of natural laws.

"Physics has lost its grip on the ground. For every anomaly, scientists pull a new parameter out of a hat instead of trying to understand the underlying principles. They have accumulated more than 30 "natural constants": all values that no one can explain." Alexander Unzicker

“The reality is that none of these companies […] are actually earning any real money. The little revenue they generate mostly comes from consulting missions […] as opposed to genuinely harnessing any advantages that quantum computers have over classical computers. […] nobody has yet come close to building a quantum machine that is actually capable of solving practical problems. The current devices are so error-prone that any information […] will almost instantly degenerate into noise. […] A convincing strategy for overcoming these errors has not yet been demonstrated. […] it is unclear as to when — if ever — it will become possible to build a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer. […] It is unclear what commercially-useful problems can even be solved […] if any. […] the quantum computing industry has yet to demonstrate any practical utility, despite the fanfare […] it became progressively more tempting for scientists to oversell their results […] a highly exaggerated perspective […] reached the mainstream […] greed and misunderstanding taking hold […] at some point the claims will be found out and the funding will dry up.” Nikita Gourianov

Inspirational quote by Max Planck about the connection between matter, spirit, and GodCopyright © yoice.net – Quote Artwork

"Gentlemen, as a physicist who has dedicated his entire life to the sober pursuit of science, to the exploration of matter, I am certainly free from the suspicion of being taken for an idle dreamer. And so, after my investigations into the atom, I declare this: There is no such thing as matter in itself. All matter comes into being and persists only through a force—a force that sets the particles of the atom into vibration and binds them together as the minutest solar system of the cosmos. Yet, since neither an intelligent nor an eternal force exists within the vast expanse of the universe—for humanity has failed to devise the long-sought perpetuum mobile—we must posit behind this force a conscious, intelligent spirit. This spirit is the primal source of all matter. It is not the visible, transient matter that constitutes the real, the true, the actual—for without the spirit, matter would not exist at all—but rather the invisible, immortal spirit that is the ultimate truth! Yet, since spirit alone cannot exist either, and every spirit belongs to a being, we are compelled to assume the existence of spiritual beings. And since these beings cannot arise from themselves but must be created, I do not shy away from naming this mysterious creator as all civilized peoples of the earth have called Him in earlier millennia: God! Thus, the physicist, tasked with the study of matter, steps from the realm of the material into the realm of the spirit. And with that, our work concludes, and we must entrust our inquiry to the hands of philosophy." Max Planck

"“The [Theory of Relativity] is a mass of errors and deceptive ideas violently opposed to the teachings of great men of science of the past and even to common sense. The theory wraps all these errors and fallacies and clothes them in magnificent mathematical garb which fascinates, dazzles and makes people blind to the underlying errors. The theory is like a beggar clothed in purple whom ignorant people take for a king. Its exponents are very brilliant men, but they are metaphysicists rather than scientists. Not a single one of the relativity propositions has been proved.”" Nikola Tesla

"As the physicist Sabine Hossenfelder recently pointed out, a key assumption like ‘the cosmological principle’ - that the universe is on average the same in all directions - does not hold up well against observations." Bjørn Ekeberg & Louis Marmet

Quote by Spyridon Kakos about Galileo Galilei and the Copernican principle as a modern dogma challenging mainstream astronomyCopyright © yoice.net – Quote Artwork

"For centuries the case of Galileo Galilei has been the cornerstone of every major argument against the church and its supposedly unscientific dogmatism. The church seems to have condemned Galileo for his heresies, just because it couldn’t and wouldn’t handle the truth. Galileo was a hero of science wrongfully accused and now – at last – everyone knows that. But is that true? This paper tries to examine the case from the point of modern physics and the conclusions drawn are startling. It seems that contemporary church was too haste into condemning itself. The evidence provided by Galileo to support the heliocentric system do not even pass simple scrutiny, while modern physics has ruled for a long time now against both heliocentric and geocentric models as depictions of the “truth”. As Einstein eloquently said, the debate about which system is chosen is void of any meaning from a physics’ point of view. At the end, the selection of the center is more a matter of choice rather than a matter of ‘truth’ of any kind. And this choice is driven by specific philosophical axioms penetrating astronomy for hundreds of years now. From Galileo to Hubble, the Copernican principle has been slowly transformed to a dogma followed by all mainstream astronomers. It is time to challenge our dogmatic adherence to the anti-humanism idea that we are insignificant in the cosmos and start making true honest science again, as Copernicus once postulated." Spyridon Kakos
